>When we’re together, my friend Paul and I act like we’re 75 year old men who’s only joy in life is the old linoleum coffee shop three blocks from our house that has terrible service and even worse coffee. We go to the dump anyway though, because, we imagine, we’ve been going there our whole lives, and is it really worth it to switch now?

To punctuate this idea, Paul and I got fancy a few nights ago and decided to pour our beer into glasses – a luxury in our small little lives. Paul knew he’d just have to wash the glass later, and beer tastes fine right out of the bottle, but we were feeling upper crust, and tall, skinny beer glasses just felt right. “Why not!” we exclaimed, “you only live once!” But as Paul poured his lager into the glass, it shattered into a million pieces, leaving his finger sliced and dehabilitated.

We won’t ever try to have fun again.

Nina can sing a Hall & Oates song and give it such serious joyousness it makes you sick. She loved to sing cover songs, and I know how she feels. Nina loved music the way we all do – the way a good song just hits you and you want to sing it over and over again. You want to sing it so loud that everyone knows how much you love the song. And she didn’t discriminate based on genre, gender, race, tempo, or anything else that can make music feel stratified. She heard Hall & Oates and found something Nina in it. I, rather small-mindedly, tend to hear post-60s songs as “modern”, separate from the tradition of folks, blues, and jazz that lasted until the late 60’s, that something about Hall & Oates applies to a different culture than, say, a Mississippi John Hurt song, but Nina locates the Blues in Hall & Oates. And I can’t say the word joyous enough when I hear this song. Its a celebration!
