>I posted this video a few months ago but I want to post it again because it is precisely the kind of politics that I think is worth engaging in. I do not mean to say that her politic is perfect, but I see someone who is approaching a practical and very important problem – that megacorporations SEGREGATE the skills that will be required to succeed in the future from CERTAIN POPULATIONS – and tries to deal with the problem in a practical and productive way. That young girls, and I believe gay boys, have a certain SHYNESS when it comes to engaging in activities that will allow them to keep pace with progress, is an infinitely interesting problem. While many of my male middle school compatriots played NBA draft, I never once tried a shoot-em-up game or a sports game. I’m not sure if that effects the type of citizen I am. Perhaps it makes me better, but perhaps it makes me less naturally inclined to engage with the real-time culture. The fact that Brenda Laurel conducted her research by speaking with the demographic of young girls I think is a revolution. Although tween girls have become a cliche demographic, there are radical ways to interact with young people. And while certainly she is a corporate person selling a product, I think her brand of politics is in many ways the future of change. I believe political people must engage with the market, and I believe it is possible for the market to, even while it reduces people to consumers, make waves in gender.

Jessica Calvanico is a cosmic life partner of mine. We are both on this planet to do the same thing we just don’t know what it is yet. She has a radio show in Chicago that is all-girls. Not in an anti-boy way. Never that. Just in a we-love-our-feminine side kind of way. I was lucky enough to be a call-in guest on the show last summer, right around my 23rd birthday. Because of the time difference I had to call in to the show at around 6 AM New York time and I had stayed up all night the night before jumping on a trampoline so I’m not my sharpest. Plus I got cut off after like 10 minutes. But the lightness of her soul is impossible to miss if you listen. That picture is her performing with her band Geffika. Download the radio show on which I’m featured:
